HAIR today- gone tomorrow

A whopping 83% of African American women said they don't exercise because they don't know what to do with their hair. I feel you on that. Americans standard of beauty has us believing that long straight hair is the only hair that is beautiful. We spend BILLIONS of dollars per year on our hair. We weave it, wave it, braid it, wig it, dred it, press it, perm it,  I can go on and on. It doesn't matter where you live, what you do for a living, how much money you have or don't have to spend on hair....IT IS A HUGE TOPIC OF CONVERSATION. A comedian once said that water is a black woman's cryptonite...he was dead on with that one.

I have seen women in the gym that refuse to break a sweat because it will ruin their do. Women will NOT have sex because they just spent hours in a salon getting hooked up and is not about to mess it up for 20 minutes of pleasure. Not worth the risk...

I was one of those women. That was one of the BIGGEST reasons I fought going to the gym. I thought that doing my thigh master was all I needed. After all, I could.tone my thighs while watching TV and didn't have to worry about sweating my hair out. It made total sense to me.

Well that was then.... this is now. One day I went to the hair dresser, whom I LOVE, I have the same hairdresser for 10+ years and told her to whack it off. She didn't take me serious and cut a few inches off. I said no honey I want it off. Sooo off with my hair. I decided then and there that I didn't need it. I went and joined a gym that day. If I would have thought about it, I would have regretted it.

I wouldn't dare recommend anyone do what I did. I am not suggesting that I take my health anymore serious than anyone else. I am asking that you find your happy space that will allow you to get healthy, lead a healthier lifestyle and look AWESOME doing it.

  1. What a commitment to decide to cut your hair off! Fortunately I am dreaded up, so I don't have to worry about the hair issue like many do. I just wish that more African American women would realize we are so much more than our hairstyles! We have to work on being the total package!

  2. Well said ChiChi. It is a hard balance because we want to look and feel beautiful. Some women let their hair define their beauty. Your quality of life is greatly impacted by how healthy your body is. I can relate to both points. Men are attracted to hair and will gravitate towards women with lots of it. Even if it is store bought. We have a long way to go.
